Over the last 7 years, the Cleveland Clinic team has worked hard to build a “culture of improvement” based on building capability through improved systems and behaviors. Then in 2020, COVID19 hit. Chief Improvement Officer Dr. Lisa Yerian, like so many of us, had never faced anything like this before. Unsure about what to do, Lisa remembered the story of Doug Friesen and Toyota from an influential 1992 Harvard Business School case study. Lisa wasn’t building cars (and the crisis her team faced wasn’t a production quality problem), but Lisa saw deep similarities. And key differences.
